Here’s what I’m thinking about today…

“Come gather ’round people

Wherever you roam

And admit that the waters

Around you have grown

And accept it that soon

You’ll be drenched to the bone

If your time to you is worth savin’

Then you better start swimmin’ or you’ll sink like a stone

For the times they are a-changin’”

So let me ask you this: when was the last time you Googled yourself or an idea with which you wanted to be identified? Because I’ve been very active in Google Plus for the past couple of years I’m used to seeing my name and my picture associated with my Google Plus profile show up at the top of search when I Google my name.

Today I was having a discussion with another Google Plus person named Monika Schmidt. If you’re reading this article in Google Plus or Twitter then chances are pretty good that you are familiar with her and her work. Four months we have been talking about the importance of having your own website and why and today it became clear to both of us the reason why. What I found when I Googled my own name was that my Google Plus profile does not appear until the middle of the second page in Google search and everyone knows that the second page of Google Search is the best place to hide a dead body. You can see the results below:

What I’m seeing is that Google my business has become the new Google Plus for getting found and that if you want to show up in the top of search without paying for advertising the Google My Business is the place to be.

I feel very sorry for those who have relied solely on Google Plus to get found because I’m sorry to say that it does not seem to be useful for that purpose any longer. I’ll be very interested to hear about your experience and have your comments below.
